Salt: Why is it so import for our bodies?

August 1, 2025

Let’s take a moment to talk about something that often gets a bad rap: salt.

Salt is so much more than just a seasoning. It’s not our enemy, nor is it something we can disregard. This conversation isn’t just about nutrition; it touches on the very essence of our bodies, influencing everything from our energy levels to our memory.

When it comes to salt, we often hear misconceptions, such as:

– Salt raises blood pressure.

– Sodium is harmful.

– Salt is only there to add flavour.

But what’s often left unspoken?

The reality is that refined salt undergoes processes that strip it of its natural properties. In contrast, natural salts—like Himalayan salt, sea salt, and Celtic grey salt—are packed with minerals and truly support our body’s delicate balance.

Every nerve signal, heartbeat, and cellular process relies on sodium. Without the right kind of salt, we may find ourselves facing challenges like:

– Adrenal fatigue

– Issues with water retention

– Brain fog

– Low energy levels

From a biological perspective, salt is essential for our overall health. It:

– Helps regulate our body’s membrane potential

– Stabilises hydration at the cellular level, going beyond just the bloodstream

– Works harmoniously with potassium, magnesium, and water to produce energy

So, what’s really at stake? Refined salt is often just an industrial product. Table salt can be chemically altered and may include additives that aren’t ideal for us.

The reduction of salt intake gained momentum in the 1970s, often based on studies that have since been challenged. Meanwhile, many Indigenous cultures have thrived on diets rich in natural salts. For centuries, from hunters to farmers, people have relied on salt to replenish their strength, and it has played a significant role in traditions and healing practices for over 5,000 years.

In my daily life, I sprinkle a small pinch of mineral salt in my water or tea each morning to stay hydrated. I incorporate it into almost every meal and use it while fasting to maintain my energy and avoid feeling lightheaded. I prefer this to electrolyte packs, which can contain added chemicals and sugars.

Let’s embrace the power of salt—cook with it, use it wisely, and appreciate its significance in our lives.

Why do we often receive conflicting messages about salt? Because genuine salt has the ability to:

– Alleviate headaches

– Support recovery for our adrenal system

– Boost our energy and cognitive clarity

– Help us restore balance without relying heavily on medication

Most importantly, real salt cannot be patented or industrialised without losing its inherent benefits.

Our bodies are fueled by minerals, and salt is a vital part of that. This isn’t just a passing trend; it’s a critical truth that deserves our attention. Let’s welcome back natural salt and allow it to guide our bodies towards true vitality.

And of course, add mushrooms to that salt and you have something truly extraordinary!
